Caracas, 5th August 2015 – The Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Delcy Rodríguez, presented through infographics how Venezuela has been deprived of Essequibo territory by the British Empire. It remains valid as a territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana which nation illegally inherited that territory.
According to the chronology, Venezuela has included Essequibo as a part of its territory since it gained independence. In 1835, the British Empire started its illegal seizure of Venezuelan territory through the Schomburgk’s Line, named after a British explorer – Robert Hermann Schomburgk.
In 1840 Venezuela was already deprived of 141.930 square km of its land which in 1877, under the British expansionism, spread to 167.830 square km.
